In my latest paintings I have overtly lifted compositions from collages. The resulting work has a patch-worked layout, which appears to have been cut up and reassembled. I like the way that the imagery becomes complex and varied. I like the invisible lines that occur as one patch of marks sit beside another patch where the colours shift and contrast.
I think the reason this seems so relevant to me at the moment is because of the way recent changes feel like I am pulling apart elements of my work, home and life to be then put back together with greater consideration to my well-being. The changes are all wonderful but the process has it’s discomforting elements. My home, garden…and car park are crowded! Therefore the paintings have this complexity mixed with apparent joy.
